Personal Statement Peer Review Group 4
This is the page for Group 4: Latasha Davis, Kourtney Lovett, Natasha Wickenheiser
Everyone should post a comment here where you briefly introduce yourself, you explain what your Personal Statement is about (that is, what’s the program you’re hypothetically applying to, etc.) and where you share a links to the Google Doc version of the draft of your Personal Statement and of a draft of your assignment memo. Remember to share both of these documents and make them so anyone with a link can edit them!
You have until Friday to begin peer review! If you have a draft ready to share earlier, by all means share it. But you have to have a version of your Personal Statement up and ready for peer review by the end of the day on Friday. If you are late, I will dock a letter grade from your project.
To get started, everyone should post a comment in your group’s page where you briefly introduce yourself, you explain what your Personal Statement is about (that is, what’s the program you’re hypothetically applying to, etc.) and where you share a links to the Google Doc version of the draft of your Personal Statement and of a draft of your assignment memo. Remember to share both of these documents and make them so anyone with a link can edit them!
To guide your comments, it’s probably useful to review the assignment again. Remember that your personal statement needs to be based on a real personal statement and that should be clear in the work you share. You want to offer advice and guidance about the effectiveness of the personal statement: that is, does it include specific detail, do you learn something about the writer, does it meet the requirements of that personal statement, etc. Make your comments right on your classmates’ Google Doc.
After you are done with your peer review, I want you to fill out this survey about the process. You should fill this survey out for each of your peers in your group by the end of the day Monday.
This survey serves two basic purposes. First, it helps in giving your peers even more feedback on their draft in a constructive way. Second, it helps me figure out who completed the peer review process as I directed. I’ll share the results of the survey with everyone on Tuesday of next week.
Hi everyone! My name is Natasha, and I chose to write my personal statement in application to Eastern Michigan University’s Graduate Certificate in Teaching of Writing program. The prompt was really vague, and only said:
Submit a statement summarizing your plans for graduate study. Your statement should be a concise, well-written essay about your background, academic and career goals, and how Eastern Michigan’s graduate program will help you attain your goals. If you are applying for non-degree or guest status, list the course(s) you wish to take and state whether you plan to seek a degree or certificate and the semester you wish to begin that program.

I look forward to reading your drafts, and hearing your criticism on mine! Please be brutally honest–I’m no longer the same writer from the anecdote I start my personal statement off with. I can take harsh criticism. 🙂
Side note that I forgot to mention, my time is basically pre-booked with sorority recruitment this weekend… so if it is at all possible, could you please try to post your links prior to Friday? Thursday afternoon and Friday morning is the time-period I’ll have the most time to start offering feedback. I want to be sure I give each of your drafts sufficient attention, but I know that the recruitment schedule is packed into Thursday-Sunday. If it is at all possible to have the links posted sooner, rather than later, that’d help a lot. If not, I totally understand. I just wanted to let you both know about the huge time commitment.
Do keep in mind that you will have until the end of the day on Monday next week to provide some feedback, too.
That’s true… I suppose it’s just in my nature to want to do things as soon as possible to prevent my group mates from having to wait on me. It will help that I have Monday as a last resort, should my weekend schedule prove too tight.

Hi Kourtney,
I’m just letting you know that I’ve made my first round of comments/suggestions to your drafts. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Natasha
Hello everyone,
I am applying for the Graduate Speech and Language Program for EMU. This is my personal statement that targets my previous knowledge and experience with SLD, my passions about the program, and what I tend to do if I were to be admitted .
